PEEKING IN A DIARY
Normally it's not something I would do It's just not kosher. A diary is a very personal thing, is it not? That said, I made an exception last week and pleaded mitigating circumstances since the author died in 1834, and was a public figure.
I first met Samuel Taylor Coleridge in high school (No, we were not classmates). You probably received the same introduction I did when you were required to memorize some of the lines from The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, or Kubla Khan.
But, back to his diary. This entry is dated July 27, 1830. In it the poet tells of a chat with a friend who took the position that it was very unfair to influence a child's mind by inculcating any opinions, especially on religious matters, before the child had come to years of discretion and was able to choose for himself.
"I showed him my garden," says Coleridge, "and told him it was my botanical garden." "How so?" asked the friend. "It is covered with weeds." "Oh," said Coleridge, "that is only because it has not yet come to its age of discretion and choice. The weeds, you see, have taken liberty to grow, and I thought it unfair of me to prejudice the soil toward roses and strawberries."
Few things should be more important to parents than the teaching and training of their children. Their welfare, both in this world and the world to come, depends upon it. May it never be said that we failed to bring them up "in the discipline and instruction of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4).
Need help in this daunting task? Why not bring them to Bible Class this week?

Dear Central Church Family,
Thank you so very much for all the prayers, cards, and visits while I was in the hospital. I am home now and doing better. Visits are appreciated.
Much love to all, Verna Nell Young.
Dear Irene [Coffman], brother Dwyane, and all the congregation of the church of Christ, Thank you for the beautiful floral arrangement you sent for Lloyd's memorial service. We had a beautiful service for my dear husband - so many words of praise for his life and faithful devotion to Christ - to his family and to his church family. All were so appropriate. He was truly the kindest, most loving man I have known, and it was an honor and a joy to be his wife for six years. Thank you again. Mildred McBroom, Redding, California
