DON'T PLAY BY SOMEONE ELSE'S RULES
He was just one of the little boys in Landon's swimming class. The instructor called him Alan. Unfortunately, that wasn't his name. That didn't seem to make much difference to the teacher. She persisted in calling him Alan. When he didn't respond to that name, she would get this attention in some other way and then relay her instructions. It appeared that she might at some point catch on and try to use his real name. But she never changed. And then something sad happened. He changed. He started answering to the name that wasn't his: Alan. He gave up and gave in to play the game by her rules, at the sacrifice of his own name.
The real tragedy, of course, is that the boy who wasn't named Alan isn't all that unique. After a while, it's easier for anyone to give in and play by somebody else's rules, even if it means sacrificing something important to you - like your identity. . . or your integrity. Sometimes you start believing what other people tell you (even about yourself) even though you know that it's not the truth. And sometimes you've heard something for so long, you just quit questioning and accept it, even though it's not right. Like the little boy, you're mainly trying to keep your head above water. You don't really see what you've sacrificed until the time comes to stop splashing around and take a stand on solid ground.
When you leave the lesson and enter life, you see what you've lost. Be sure to hold on to who you are. Proverbs 22:1 A good name is more desirable than great riches."
[Editor's comment: It seems that what happened to Alan is happening to many people in the Lord's church today. It becomes easier just to "go along" with the "changes" that are taking place than be true to your commitment to the Lord's way. WDD]
