LOVE, A BIRTHRIGHT?
"...But the greatest of these is love."
1 Corinthians 13:13

Dr. Norman Vincent Peal has written, "Love is, or should be our offspring's birthright - even more than food and shelter and protection. They are entitled to it, and they need to be reminded that it is always there. Affection can be expressed in many ways, in a shared joke, a word, a glance, a touch. Small babies need to be cuddled and petted; if they are totally deprived of this, they become neurotic. We never fully outgrow this need for a gentle touch, although it is probably the first bond to disappear when things are going badly between people.

Why do we have such a hard time showing affection to our fellowman? Why do we have problems giving people something they are entitled to? This seems to be an age-old problem.

Paul writes in the Galatian letter, "Do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command. 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other."

It is true, we never outgrow the need for love. It is necessary for our survival both physically and spiritually. It is necessary for our survival whether young or old.

As children of God, we need to make sure that our brothers and sisters are receiving their birthright. We must be certain that our mates, our children and our parents are receiving what they are entitled to. We must constantly remind one another that we are unique, valuable, and loved persons.

We must care, not bite.

We must reach out, not devour.

We must build up, not destroy.
