Bulletin for Sunday 07/18/2004

OBTAINING YOUR DREAM

"The expectations of life," said Confucius, "depend upon diligence." This truth was reinforced on my mind as I read 'To Conquer the Air' by the award-winning author, James Tobin (Perhaps you read another one of his books, Ernie Pyle's War).

To Conquer the Air tells the story of Wilbur and Orville Wright, and the great race for flight. The brothers, sons of a preacher, were brought up with modest means and without the benefit of a college education. Their lot in life seemed to be the running of a bicycle shop. That changed one day when business was slow and Will stepped out on Third Street and noticed something in the flight of a pigeon. The pigeon, in his view, was using the air rushing over its wings to move its center of pressure around its center of gravity in perfect control.

Will began his experiments in flight with an empty bicycle-tube box, then kites and gliders, eventually followed by a plane with an engine in it. Along the way were many mathematical and engineering problems to be solved; a system for measuring lift and drift at various angles to the wind; the building of a wind tunnel for experiments; and the invention of a proper engine, along with methods of controlling flight. Nothing came easily. Only through years of diligent thought and persistent work, came the success at Kitty Hawk.

The dogged diligence of the Wright brothers to fulfill their dream reminded me of what is necessary if we are to have "an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." The apostle Peter, after stating what God has done for us says, "For this very reason make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, & virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love" (2 Peter 1:5-7).

If obtaining the eternal kingdom is your goal, don't fail to "make every effort."
