SYMPATHY

1906 GERTRUDE ANDES 2005

We offer our love and sympathy to the family of Gertrude Andes. Gertrude departed this life at 98 years of age on Sunday morning. She was a longtime, faithful member of this congregation and is missed. Dwyane Dennis conducted funeral services on Wednesday afternoon at the Central building.

We also express our sympathy to Cheryl Miller in the unexpected loss of her brother, Gary VanAntwerp, on Friday of last week. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday morning at Resthaven Funeral Home.

Again we extend our sympathy to Terry Banta in the loss of his uncle, Lowell Banta. Funeral services were conducted in Tuttle on Monday morning.

ANNUAL SHAWNEE AREA
LEADERSHIP DINNER

The 2005 Leadership Dinner will be in the West Wing at Northridge this year at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, February 25. The speaker will be Rusty Tugman of the Alameda congregation in Norman. The catered meal will be $8 per person. This all adds up to good fellowship, sharing, singing, speaker, and eating. All ministers, elders, deacons, their wives, and other church leaders are encouraged to attend. Those who have formerly served as elders or deacons and widows of elders are invited to continue experiencing the joy of this occasion. Central has always been well represented at this event, and we want that to continue.

AMONG FRIENDS

with Robert Prater

To me, one of the most thought provoking scenes in the Bible is where Jesus is walking among the 7 churches of Asia and the text says that "I know your works." He knows that the church in Ephesus has "left their first love" and He knows the church at Laodicea is "lukewarm" and He knows the church at Sardis has a "reputation for being alive" but they are really dead. What if Jesus were here in Shawnee and walking among the congregations around here, what do you think He would see and say? What do you think He would say about the church here at Central? Would He find a congregation that is alive and vibrant and growing? Would He find a congregation that takes very seriously the Great Commission? Would He find a congregation that cares for the downtrodden and generously gives? Would He find a congregation that loves the truth and loves people and has a passion about teaching people the Bible?

In my office I have an article entitled "A Church Checkup." The article asks each congregation to conduct their own self-examination and ask themselves 10 questions about how they go about "kingdom business." 'd like to share those 10 qualities and questions with you. As you read them, let me ask you to look at Central and evaluate how we're doing in these areas.

"A Church Checkup".....

LISTEN - Is communication "open" in our congregation?

FEEL - How do we deal with pain and conflict?

THINK - Are we planning for the future?

VISION - Are we focused on yesterday or tomorrow?

GROWTH - How does our congregational "growth chart" look?

HEALTH - Are our church families needs being met?

FAMILY - Is our congregation a true "belonging place" for people?

STRENGTH - Is our congregation on "solid ground."?

PERCEPTION - How is our congregation viewed by our community?

What do you think? How do you see us? There's always room for improvement but I'm thankful to see us making some tremendous progress in advancing the cause of Christ here in Shawnee. God desires for His church to grow both numerically and spiritually. I believe that we are striving to grow and I'm so excited about that. Friends, may we all look for the most Biblically effective ways to advance the kingdom of God and to minister to people in this community.

"Pray with your intelligence. Bring things to God that you have
thought out and think them out again with Him. That is the secret
of good judgment. Repeatedly place your pet opinions and prejudices
before God. He will surprise you by showing you that the best of them
need refining and some the purification of destruction.
