Bulletin for Sunday 09/18/2005

AMONG FRIENDS
with Robert Prater

The congregation here at Central had such a tremendous outpouring of aid for the victims of Hurricane Katrina last Sunday morning. Sunday's special offering was over $7,900 and there is likely more to come. This generous amount was contributed over and above the regular weekly contribution of nearly $4,600 last Sunday. What a remarkable testimony to your love and generosity. These funds will be sent through local congregation and relief efforts by the Lord's church in the gulf region to assist those who have lost so much. May the Lord bless you to continue to have generous hearts and multiply your seed sown so you may have abundance unto every good work. (2 Cor. 9:8-10)

Do you know how much time it takes for a visitor to decide whether or not he or she will visit a church a second time? Incredibly, church growth research shows guests make up their minds in the first eleven minutes! By the time they drive around the parking lot, get in the front door and make it to Bible class or find their seat in worship, the family already has some "feel" as to if they will ever return.

Friends, this is especially important because our Gospel Meeting will bring several visitors our way. Of course, each week at Central we do have designated greeters to meet visitors. But, whether or not you are on official duty, we all need to make a concentrated effort to make our guests "feel" welcome and hopefully make the first eleven minutes a positive experience. Our own friends, many of whom we have had for years, will still be here later. Right now, we need to be greeting guests first. To be regarded as a friendly church is a precious commodity. Yet, it takes work to maintain that important trait. Your smile, friendliness and words of helpfulness may lead people to want to come back again, and more importantly, may result in a study of God's Word that they desperately need.

Hope to see you here Sunday

OUR GOSPEL MEETING

On Sunday we will begin our third gospel meeting with brother Ted Kell of Brownwood, Texas. Brother Kell is a native of Little Rock, Arkansas and graduated from Little Rock High School in 1950, and from David Lipscomb College with his BA degree in 1954. He married Evelyn Cole in Pulaski, Tennessee in 1954. Their children are Steve, Mark (deceased, 1988), Karla Hale, Jina Hinson, and Shawn.

Brother Kell began preaching in 1950. He has done local ministry in Manchester, Tennessee (1953-58); Janesville, Wisconsin mission work helping establish several new churches in the state (1958-70). He was an instructor at the Sunset School of Preaching, Lubbock, Texas (1970-83), helping them train 1,000 evangelists and missionaries. He then preached for the Austin Ave. Church in Brownwood, Texas (1983-98). Since that time he has done full-time evangelistic work.

He was police chaplain in Brownwood (1988-98). He has done extensive gospel preaching on radio and television. His evangelistic work has taken him into 30+ states and the countries of England, Mexico, Philippines, Korea, and Thailand.

Brother Kell was greatly appreciated by members at Central for the outstanding preaching he did in our meetings of April, 2001 and September, 2003. We anticipate his arrival for the third meeting with great joy. Don't forget the combined teen and adult classes Sunday morning at 9:30., Also keep in mind the potluck at noon on Sunday. You should bring enough food for your family and a guest.

Most of us at Central know this is a well-deserved honor, and we extend our very best wishes to Bertha Ann.

Youth News
Bob Stephens

Several of our kids were busy this past weekend. Friday night Jason Perry and Austin Beard were on the football field for the Wolves. Marla Miller was in the chorus that sang the national anthem and Nathan Kelly and Hannah Farris were in the stands and on the field with the band. Then on Saturday, Courtney Baskin, Sean Parman and Ryan Parman ran in a cross country meet in Ada. The great part about all of our kids is that as busy as they are, they remember their priorities. Christ comes first in their lives and it shows in everything they do.

Friday evening the youth have an opportunity to serve. The Shawnee football team will be having dinner in our church building and we're in charge of cleaning up. I promise we will be done in time to make the game. The football players have to be back to the field by around 5 p.m. so we'll have plenty of time to take care of business and enjoy the game.

COMING EVENTS:

Sept. 16 - Football dinner at the building

Sept. 23-24, Fall Visit (for seniors only)

Sept. 25- Sunday, AWTG @ Moore Central
