Bulletin for Sunday Sunday 01/15/2006

AMONG FRIENDS
with Robert Prater

This past Sunday the new 2006 budget was presented to the congregation. The Central church family is a giving congregation and you never fail to meet the challenges our elders put before you. A budget is so much more than dollars and cents. In a real sense it is all about the work a church is doing. Sometimes we hear a sermon on giving and listen to the presentation of the budget and we think only in terms of numbers on paper. It is easy to feel no emotion about the numbers in the budget.

So what a refreshing reminder it was on Sunday night when Al Horne gave us a report on the tremendous opportunities in South Africa and the mission work being done through the Southern Africa Bible College which we help support here at Central. Reports like this allow us in a small way to personally share in and experience the fellowship, joy and emotion about the numbers in the budget and not feel disconnected from the reality of what those numbers represent.

The numbers represent Bible class material that will touch many children's hearts and change their lives. The numbers represent food for those needy families struggling. The numbers represent missionaries and local evangelists that are supported so they can devote their lives to preaching the gospel of Christ. The numbers represent utility bills that are paid and chairs to sit in and books to sing with and on and on the list goes. The numbers in the budget are exciting because it assures us that what we consider to be a meager personal offering may well be just the money needed to feed the hungry or buy a Bible or warm an auditorium where someone who is lost will be touched by the Word of God. Those numbers represent the heart of this congregation, the corporate joining of what we individually have.

Of course we never want the Lord's work to be constrained when we "set the budget." Often times there are indeed other unexpected needs and sometimes opening doors of opportunities for doing good and reaching the lost. In such instances, we need to trust that God will provide and dedicated Christians will arise and give. After all, "we live by faith and not by sight." (2 Cor. 5:7)

Finally, please be praying for, working towards and planning to be here for a special Sunday on January 22 as our own Bob Perry presents a series of lessons on the theme of Spiritual Renewal: Transforming the Mind. Take advantage of this opportunity to invite your friends, family and neighbors who might be interested in some practical strategies for improving their life found in the Bible. I hope everyone will make a special effort to attend each of these sessions that you can on this day. May the Lord continue to bless all our labors at Central for His glory.

SPECIAL SUNDAY
OF SPIRITUAL RENEWAL

On January 22, we will host a special outreach event focusing on Spiritual Renewal. A few years ago, a British university researcher identified the third week in January as the "worst week of the year." Factors such as weather, length of daylight, debt, monthly salary, time since Christmas, and the time since failed resolutions combine to make this the low point of the year for many people. The "winter blues" are very real to many. This special day is meant to encourage others, help people find their spiritual purpose, and to help them feel better about their spiritual future.

In addition to our regular Bible class and worship times, we have scheduled a special afternoon session from 2-4 p.m. to encourage visitors from the community to attend as well as members of the church from our area sister congregations to attend. Also please note that we will now be having a potluck luncheon at noon on Sunday for everyone. Please bring enough food for your family and a guest.

This special day will feature one of our elders, Bob Perry, as the featured speaker. Bob is an entertaining speaker and has published two books during the past few years. Dynamic Thinking: Models for Organizational Leadership and Spiritual Renewal: Transforming the Mind.

Learning to think differently and more positively can help anyone achieve more peace of mind, more energy, and have more satisfaction in life. Spiritually centered people are better equipped to adapt and overcome life's challenges. They are more self-assured and more positive. They make better life choices and consistently do the right things. People who know how to rekindle their spirit and inner strength have the energy to tackle problems, overcome disappointments, and handle success.

On Sunday we will be sharing a proven method to help people positively improve their life. This promises to be an entertaining and informative presentation for anyone interested in transforming their life through positive improvement in attitude and performance. Why not be here and invite a neighbor to come with you. You'll be glad you did.
