REQUESTING PRAYERS

Sunday morning Darlene Todd responded to the invitation humbly requesting prayers of encouragement in her life right now.  We have a spiritual obligation to be supportive toward our dear sister in Christ.  Let’s all show our love and support to her.  Please continue to keep Darlene and her family in your prayers.

AMONG FRIENDS

with Robert Prater

No one knows the exact day when Jesus was born.  The Bible does not give us the date of the birth of Jesus.  Scholars confess that they do not know the actual date of Christ’s birth. (most likely Jesus was not even born in the month of December).  The Bible gives two accounts of the birth of Jesus.  They are found in Matthew 1 and 2 and Luke 2.  No mention is made of the date.  No command or example is found in the New Testament of any celebration of Christ’s birth.  Rather, the New Testament emphasis is on the death and resurrection of Christ.  His death made possible the forgiveness of our sins.  His resurrection makes possible our victory over death.  The Lord’s Supper is to “show the Lord’s death until He comes” (1 Cor. 11:26).  The only day in any way set aside for special religious observance in the New Testament is the Lord’s day, Sunday, the first day of the week. (Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 16:2; Rev. 1:10)

So what should be the Christian’s attitude toward Christmas?  I personally believe this is truly between each individual Christian and the Lord. (Read Romans 14 for related issues)  From a religious standpoint, I for one, want to continue to help people understand that Christmas as a religious “holy day” is a human tradition.  (See Matt. 15:7-9; Gal. 4:10-11; Col. 3:17)  Yet, on the other hand, I was raised and taught to celebrate Christmas not as a religious holiday but as a family one.  So in my opinion I think there is nothing wrong with enjoying the cultural aspects of the Christmas holiday, just as one would enjoy any other legal holiday during the year.  If one wishes to have a big dinner, get together with family and friends and exchange gifts and love for one another, there certainly seems nothing wrong with that to me.

I also believe this time of year is one of the best times afforded to the Christian to share the Good News that Jesus saves!  Since this is a holiday in which so many minds are thinking about Christ, (which is never a bad thing) what a great opportunity to lift up the name of Jesus to a lost and dying world.  The message of the manger must always point people to the cross – the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.  The important thing is that He was born and that He died for our sins.  We’re not worshiping a helpless infant lying in a manger.  We’re worshiping a risen and exalted Christ who has all power in heaven and in earth (Matthew 28:18).

"The spirit of Christmas needs to be superseded by the Spirit of Christ.
The spirit of Christmas is annual; the Spirit of Christ is eternal.
The spirit of Christmas is sentimental; the Spirit of Christ is supernatural.
The spirit of Christmas is a human product; the Spirit of Christ is a divine person.
That makes all the difference in the world."
