AMONG FRIENDS

with Robert Prater

In his book, Growing True Disciples, George Barna reports “evangelism is not a priority to most Christians.  Less than one of ten said they have ever intentionally built a relationship with someone in the hope of being able to lead the person to Christ.  This in turn is probably related to the fact that only one of every eight adult believers feel adequately prepared to effectively share their faith.”

Friends, the Central eldership have decided that the time has come to renew our commitment to personal evangelism and to become adequately prepared in doing so.  We want to make this our goal in the coming weeks and months ahead during 2008.  We want to energize and mobilize the congregation and provide the evangelistic training, encouragement and tools needed for this purpose.  It is our hope and prayer that this congregation can really begin working towards having an outstanding and permanent evangelism program in place for years to come.

Therefore, to begin working towards this effort, this coming Sunday morning, and the Central congregation will view a great series of lessons on DVD entitled, “Searching for Truth.”  I believe this new evangelism tool will fill a need for an up to date approach to teaching the lost.  It has the potential of becoming for the church of today what the Jule Miller filmstrips were for the church of a generation ago.  The truth of salvation never changes, but the presentation must be fitted for each generation in order to most effectively reach them.  The series is true to the Gospel, and covers all the foundation principles to convert the lost.  It is taught by John Moore, evangelist with the Dripping Springs church in Texas and produced by World Video Bible School in Maxwell, Texas.

Much more will be said in the weeks to come about all this and the vital part that each member will be needed to contribute.  Right now here is what you can do:

·         Be thinking about those you already know and love who need the gospel

·         Take advantage of future special outreach events to invite others

·         Avail yourself to opportunities to learn and be trained in sharing the gospel

·         Commit to being here over the next three weeks on Sunday and Wednesday evenings as we watch this DVD series.

·         Finally, please pray, pray, pray!

Youth News

Bob Stephens

Congratulations to Austin Beard!        Austin has received quite a bit of recognition for his efforts on the football field his senior season.   Austin received the Fighting Heart Award from the football coaches.      He made first team All District, the Big All City team, All State Lineman for 5-A.  He also received Honorable Mention on the Tri County team. Good job Austin.

Several of our kids are doing extra curricular activities this semester.      Molly Gettle is playing soccer, Wade Baskin & Austin Beard are in track, Lettie Curtis is on academic team, and Kenton McGalliard is playing tennis.  Good luck in these activities, and remember to do everything to the glory of God!

We have ten kids signed up for LTC this year.   The number isn’t huge, but their hearts set on serving the Lord is!  Courtney and Wade Baskin, Austin and Chad Beard, Lettie Curtis, Bryce Dean, Molly Gettle, Brandon Gober, Keon Lawrence and Eric Park are making plans to participate.  Of these ten, Lettie, Keon and Eric are first-timers.  LTC is early this year, March 21 & 22, and it’s being held in Rogers, Arkansas this year due to construction in Tulsa.    LTC is such an excellent way for the kids to learn how many ways there are to serve the Lord.

The teens are having a Super Bowl Party Sunday night after worship at the Youth House.          We’re gonna have nachos and anything else you bring!

Oklahoma Christian’s Spring Visit is coming soon, Feb. 29 & March 1.  Spring visit is geared for juniors and seniors in high school.  The cost for Spring visit is $40 which includes a Spring Sing ticket.       You can register on-line by going to www.oc.edu and clicking on the Spring Visit icon.  We are going to Spring Sing on Saturday, March 1.  The cost is $12.  Several of our former youth group members will be participating in Spring Sing, so you won’t want to miss it!     Let me know if you’re interested in going and we’ll get your seat reserved.
