AMONG FRIENDS

with Robert Prater

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for Americans who have died in military service to our nation.  To remember the sacrifices of those in our past is not only right and good, but essential.  Without such sacrifices, we would have no present freedom, security, or stability.  And without the willingness of those who remember and imitate by continuing to fight, we would have no future as a nation.

As Christian people we observe a “memorial” more often than most.  We meet on a weekly basis to remember what has been sacrificed for our freedom.  There was a song that was popular a few years back and is still pretty popular today called “God Bless the U.S.A.  You’ve probably heard it.  A line from that song states: “And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.”  It is talking of the right to be free and the men who died to give us that here in our country.

Some groups at times have changed the wording of that song to say “I won’t forget the MAN who died.”  Let’s not forget that Jesus died for our sins to be forgiven.  On most communion tables I’ve seen are the engraved words: “This do in remembrance of me.”  Let’s meet on Sunday and observe a memorial and keep in remembrance all that Christ has done for us to make us spiritually free from sin and death. (1 Cor. 15:55-57)

Just as many people will display American flags on Memorial Day, let us proudly display daily and live in such a way so that people can see that we are Christians.  “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.  Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”  (Galatians 5:1 NIV)

SYMPATHY

We express our love and sympathy to Cathy Pettyjohn in the unexpected loss of her brother-in-law, Charles L. Ridout of Sunnyvale, California.  A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Resthaven Funeral Home.

We extend sincere sympathy to the family of former member, Judi Campbell.  Judi passed away this past week, and a memorial service was to be at Walker Funeral Service Chapel on Thursday morning of this week.   She was the daughter of the late Nadine Burrows.

Clavin Norwood has requested prayers for a co-worker, Juan Matananes and his family in the loss of  a son, Henry Wetselline, in a traffic accident.

THANK YOU

To our brethren, Our deepest gratitude to you for the visits, cards, phone calls, food, flowers, and love given to us during John’s stay in the hospital.  Also, a special ‘thank you’ to the angels with lawnmowers.  We are hopeful John will be well and able to do the things he likes to do – maybe fish.  With Christian love, John & Beverly (Aylor)

"As Christians we accept one foundational truth - God -
and everything else makes sense. An atheist denies God and has
to accept incredible explanations for everything else. It takes
more faith to deny God than to believe in Him. "
