AMONG FRIENDS

with Robert Prater

We are now less than two weeks from our Gospel Meeting with Phil Sanders on October 5-8.  The theme will be “Why You Should Be a Christian.”  I believe this subject matter is very timely for our day and age and will be designed to help others know what true N.T. Christianity is all about.  We are encouraging each member or each family unit at Central to invite friends and relatives to join us for this special day.  Hopefully this is just the right opportunity to invite friends and relatives who are not Christians but with whom you have been working or for whom you have been praying this year.

There are few more fertile “fishing pools” for life-transforming evangelism than the natural network of friendships with which we interact on a regular basis.  Simply put, friendship evangelism is the most effective and the simplest way for every Christian to bring people to the Lord.  If we were to take a survey in most congregations, 75% to 90% would say a friend or relative led them to Christ.  There are husbands and wives who have been won to Christ by their spouses, there are children who have been won by their parents, and perhaps grandchildren.  Older Christians have a wonderful opportunity to have a positive influence upon our grandchildren.  Others have been won by their friends and associates on the job.  Friends with this in mind, always remember that you are our best source of advertisement and the best source of our growth.  Who do you know who needs to hear God’s saving message?  Invite that person to the gospel meeting!

One final note concerning our Gospel Meeting.  Phil Sanders shared this very personal note when he wrote, “2008 marks the 90th year since my grandparents and their family obeyed the gospel at the Central Church of Christ in Shawnee.  Going back to your roots reminds you who you are, whose you are, and where you belong.  Shawnee is home—Louisa, Kickapoo, Harrison, and Broadway are streets that fill me with memories.  Long before the mall there was downtown.  I remember Jr. High across the street from a 12cent hamburger place with a Scottish name (but not McDonald’s).  I remember high school on Union St. (not out by the football field).  I remember Jim Thorp Stadium and 5-cent taffy.  Nothing in quite some time has kindled all the feelings that going home seems to stir in my soul.  With love and appreciation,  Phil.”  Remember to keep Phil and our meeting in all your prayers.

CATERED FELLOWSHIP MEAL

Please keep in mind the luncheon planned for the entire congregation following the Sunday morning service on October 5 in the fellowship room.  It will be catered by Paul’s Place Steak House and will consist of  your choice of  chicken or smoked ham, two sides, green salad, potato, green beans, bread, cake or cookie.  We are making preparation for additional overflow seating in classrooms and other locations in the building.  There will be plenty of space for members and guests to enjoy the wonderful meal and fellowship.

SYMPATHY

We extend our loving sympathy to Martha Chaffin in the loss of her sister, Jewer Dean McCormick.  Funeral services were conducted on Friday of last week in Keota, Oklahoma.
