AMONG FRIENDS
Robert Prater

On Saturday, November 15, the Central congregation has another great opportunity to serve and show Christ to some of the most needy in our community with our Warmth from the Heart coat giveaway.  Ron and Debbie Taffe always do a tremendous job of organizing and planning this benevolent and outreach ministry.  There is still time to sign up to help volunteer in working on the actual Saturday morning giveaway or in providing donations of coats.  If you like, you can simply give money to Ron or Debbie which will be used to buy items needed.  I am so grateful that the Central church is involved in good service efforts like this.

Nobody understood the servant concept any better than Jesus.  Listen to the words of Jesus in John 13:34.  “A new command I give you: Love one another.  As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (NIV)  Do you remember what Jesus was doing prior to this?  That is right!  He was washing the disciple’s feet.  This was the work of a servant.  Jesus was a true servant.  Mark 10:45 says, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Not only did Jesus show His compassion and servant attitude for others in need but he also taught great lessons on the subject.  Perhaps the best known and most striking lessons that Jesus ever taught about our responsibility in helping others are found in the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), and the picture of the final judgment scene with the sheep and the goat (Matt. 25:31-46).

We need to note that in each of the above cases not only were friends or brethren to be helped, but the stranger as well.  These are the exact instructions that are given to Christians in the New Testament church, “Keep on loving each other as brothers.  Do not forget to entertain strangers…..” (Hebrews 13:1-2a)  The apostle Paul wrote to several congregations and instructed them with these words: “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” (Galatians 6:10 NIV).  The church’s responsibility of helping the needy is not, therefore, limited to its own people.

Truly Christ is our example in attitude toward rendering service to others.  He taught His disciples to love and have compassion for the unfortunate, and He practiced what He taught.  If we are to walk in His footsteps and follow His example, we too must do the same.

The legend is told of a desert wanderer who found a crystal spring of unsurpassed freshness.  The water was so pure he decided to bring some to his king.  Barely satisfying his own thirst, he filled a leather bottle with the clear liquid and carried it many days beneath the desert sun before he reached the palace.  When he finally laid his offering at the feet of his sovereign, the water had become stale and rank due to the old container in which it had been stored.  But the king would not let his faithful subject even imagine that it was unfit for use.  He tasted it with expressions of gratitude and delight, and sent away the loyal heart filled with gladness.  After he had gone, others sampled it and expressed their surprise that the king had even pretended to enjoy it.  “Ah! Said he, “it was not the water he tasted, but the love that prompted the offering.”  Friends many times our service is marked by multiplied imperfections, but the Master looks at our motives and says, “It is good.” (Heb. 6:10)

Youth News
Bob Stephens

Our annual Hayride is scheduled for Saturday, November 15.  I know what you’re thinking, you’re thinking, ‘Bob, that’s the day of our coat give away’.  And you are right, but the give away will be done by early afternoon and the hayride won’t start until 5:00 in the evening!  Everyone is welcome to come!  We will supply the dogs and we’ll get in touch with some of you to help supply some of the other stuff.  You’ll want to bring lawn chairs, something to roast a hotdog on and wear old shoes (it’s a cow pasture). So mark your calendar now for this great time of fun and fellowship around the campfire.
