AMONG FRIENDS
Robert Prater

We as Christians realize that we live in a fallen world, and much of what is around us is pagan, or of pagan origin.  For instance, even the name “Sunday” is derived from the Latin “dies solis”, “sun’s day,” the name of a pagan Roman holiday, yet we use that term all the time, even referring to “Sunday worship” or “Sunday services.  Now, we know that we do not worship the Sun, but are simply using a word from our society that happens to have pagan roots.  Of course I fully agree that no believer should ever observe pagan religious holidays nor should we ever incorporate pagan customs into the worship of our God.

Christmas is not Christ’s birthday, nor are we ever commanded to honor or celebrate His birth. (unlike the weekly observances of the Lord’s Supper each first day of the week).  Yet our culture has chosen this as an annual holiday, and it becomes much like any other national holiday for the Christian.  We do not sin by putting up Christmas trees, lights, buying presents, sending cards, etc.  We are in no way honoring any pagan god by using the day or the props set apart for that.  If a Christian chooses not to celebrate Christmas then that is fine, but if they do it is also fine.

Now I’m glad that even but for a moment once every year every human being in the world is confronted with the fact that the Son of God assumed human flesh and came into the world to save men.  I would suggest that we use this national celebration to share some truth about who Christ really is, why He came into this world, and how they may obtain His salvation.

Certainly then, no one can think that it is wrong for believers, during this season of the year, to express thanks and praise to God for His unspeakable gift, the Lord Jesus Christ.  It is never wrong, but always right to think of Him, speak of Him, and sing His praise.  Rather than not singing Watts’ grand old hymn, Joy To The World, we ought to sing it year round.

Now there are some aspects about the Christmas season both morally and religiously that we cannot agree with, but I am delighted for this season of the year (for any season) that brings families together, encourages kindness and goodwill, promotes thoughtfulness of and generosity to others, and causes minds to think about Jesus.  Aren’t you?

REQUESTING PRAYERS

Sunday evening sister Agnes Norwood responded to the invitation humbly asking for prayers of encouragement that she might persevere and be strong in her life right now.  Let’s all be supportive toward our dear sister in Christ.  Please continue to keep Agnes and her family in your prayers.

CONGRATULATIONS

We extend our best wishes to Doris Phillips and Harvey Young who were united in marriage in Fort Smith on Thursday of last week.  They plan to make their home in Fort Gibson.  They promise we will see them often.

THANK YOU

My Dearest Church Family,  I am thankful that God has put you in my life.  Through you I have seen God’s love.  My faith is strengthened and I am encouraged by your dedication to Him.  Thank you so much!                Your Sister, Pamela Blackshire

Youth News
Bob Stephens

We have a wrestler in our midst.  Last Saturday Dresean Whiting wrestled in a tournament for the Shawnee Wolves.  Shawnee took sixth place while Dresean won all his matches.  Over the course of two days at the tournament, Dresean wrestled seven times and won each one.  One would think that would wear a person out, but not Dre, he was in class Sunday morning with his usual smile.  Way to go Dresean!

We have a few things scheduled for the youth group while school’s out for the holidays.  They’re listed below in the coming events.  I encourage all the teens to be at everything possible to enjoy the fun and fellowship we have together.  It just wouldn’t be the same without you!
