AMONG FRIENDS
With Robert Prater

Our annual Vacation Bible School begins next Monday and is a unique and wonderful part of the ongoing work of the Central congregation.  Each year, it presents us with an opportunity to spend an entire week teaching the Bible to our children and their friends.  In some cases, it may be the only exposure to the Lord’s church that children in our community receive.  I have heard it said that Vacation Bible School is like a gospel meeting for kids, and I think that sentiment is exactly right.  Our VBS ought to be the very best that we can make it, and I’m thankful that is the case here at Central.  What a tremendous opportunity VBS presents for us all to serve the Lord.  There are few events in which more members of the congregation participate than VBS.  It does not matter how young or old; experienced, or inexperienced you may be, there is something you can do to help make your VBS great.

VBS is time well spent in a child’s life.  The lessons they learn in those classes will feed their souls and help them to grow up to be strong and faithful to God.  We all want what is best for our children, so let’s make sure that they are present for every day of VBS and let’s make sure that we are doing all we can to make it the best that it can be!

Now VBS also serves as a tremendous teaching tool for our children and as an excellent form of outreach to the community.  If your friends, family members, co-workers or neighbors have young children, please give them a personal invitation to attend.  If you have not enrolled your children and any visitors they will be bringing, please do so.

VBS OPEN HOUSE –On Friday evening, July 17 at 7:00 p.m. we will have our special concluding VBS Program followed by an Open House with hotdogs, cold pop, snow cones, plus a moonwalk bounce and obstacle course, and Pony rides!  Great fun and fellowship for everyone to enjoy!  There will be plenty of visitors to meet and get acquainted with.  Please keep all our efforts next week in your prayers and continue to help us make this year’s VBS the best it can be!

Naomi (Richards) Rutledge has returned to Shawnee, to her old address of 406 N. Kimberly, Shawnee, OK 74801, and to her former congregation.  Her phone number is 395-0042.

Royce and Kathy Peerson have returned to Shawnee from Holdenville and now live at 1817 N. Bryan, Shawnee, OK 74804.  Their phone number is 273-2173.  We have missed these three faithful Christians and are delighted to have them back in Shawnee

SYMPATHY

We extend our deepest sympathy to Ivan Stewart and the rest of the family of Polly who passed away following a fall last Saturday.  The Stewart’s have been frequent visitors and are well known throughout the brotherhood.  Services were held Thursday, July 9, at the North MacArthur church of Christ

THANK YOU

George and Carolyn Mastick would like to thank everyone who contributed to the Medical Mission Trip to Nicaragua.  You were more than generous.  The items given will be well used and we know will be appreciated by the Nicaraguan people.  They are so needy and anything we provide them is received with a big smile and many times a big hug.  We will try to bring these hugs back with us for you.  Again thank you.

Dear Central Members, Thank you for the generous reception, gifts and advice.  I will put it all to good use.  It’s greatly appreciated.  Love, Tanner Nipper

PRAYER CONCERNS

Since our last Gospel Guide was published two weeks ago, Joe Magee has had a second knee surgery and is doing well.

Don Wills has had his third surgery for a broken arm, and it is believed that this one will finally be successful.

Earl Finch had very major colon surgery and remains in the VA Hospital.  He faces a long recuperation time.

It has been good to have back for a while Josh Lyons.  He will be returning back to Iraq at the end of the week.  Please continue to remember him in your prayers.

Royce Peerson spent some time this past week in Unity Health Center with heat related illness.

Tim Norton has been dismissed from Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation Hospital and is home.

Ruth Autry has moved to Shawnee Colonial Estates, Room 81.  It was also good to see her in services Sunday.  She would appreciate your visits.

ALREADY JULY!!!

This past month has just flown by like a feather in the wind, or as Jill, my wife says, “like a sports car on the Autobahn!”  We have sure started off running and never quit.  Burnt Cabin Christian Camp along with Mini Camp for the younger ones, have come and gone.  I am so excited that our service project for this month went so well and I hope to be able to continue with them.  We offered our services to Bertha Ann Young last Friday morning before the heat of the day, and gained many benefits from it.  The teens really did enjoy getting their hands dirty in doing something for someone else and felt they made a difference in one of our church family’s life.  What a great way to show our love and appreciation to someone.  Next on the agenda is VBS coming up this next week.  Unfortunately, I will be out of pocket for the next two weeks with my military commitment, but am confident that there will be no lack of involvement from the church family to make this important event for the young people a success.  With the summer quickly slipping away from us, Bob and I are ready to send it off with a blow out event!  Thank you for the support and prayers for the youth and our events.  We continue to seek your support.

Matt Sloan
