AMONG FRIENDS

With Robert Prater

VBS 2009 is well underway.  The children have been great listeners and learners, and we are having a great time with our cowboy/western theme, “Wanted by God.”  On Monday we had 85 kids and 102 on Tuesday.  We will have a more complete report next week.  Please don’t forget about our VBS Open House program on Friday evening at 7:00.  Afterwards there will be hotdogs, cold pop, snow cones, a moonwalk bounce and obstacle course, plus pony rides!  A great time of fellowship and a terrific opportunity to get better acquainted with many of our visiting families and guests.

“Sing praises to the Lord, who dwells in Zion!  His deeds among the people.” (Psalm 9:11)  Every Christian should have something good to talk about.  Are you talking about what God is doing or has already done in your life?  God, who dwells within us, wants us to declare His deeds among the people. (cf. 2 Peter 2:9)  We need to tell our friends, our neighbors, our children, our grandchildren about the great things God is doing for us!  Our human tendency is to talk most of the time about all the negative things that happen to us.  We must understand that there is already too much discouragement, bitterness and negativism in the world.  We should not add more “logs to the fire.”

No, as children of God, we must declare a different attitude.  We should sing praises thus revealing an attitude of joy and faith.  We must reveal to the world that God is powerful, merciful and full of kindness.  We must declare it with our mouths but also with our lives.  Let’s declare His amazing grace!  That is definitely something good to talk about.

TO NICARAGUA

George and Carolyn Mastick begin their journey to Nicaragua on Saturday of this week to minister to the people of that country – especially the children.  Remember them in your prayers, praying for their safety and for their success in showing the love of Christ to those in need both physically and spiritually.

THANK YOU

A special thank you to the many friends here at  Central who came in for our Fiftieth Anniversary reception and for all the beautiful cards of congratulations you sent.  We love and appreciate all of you.  This has been the perfect place to live nearly half of those 50 years.

It was good to see Royce Peerson back in worship Sunday.

Youth News
Bob Stephens

YIKES! We have more drivers hitting the streets in the next few months!  Wade Baskin, Keon Lawrence and Dresean Whiting, will all be turning 16 in the coming months.  Clear the streets, look both ways, and pray for their folks!  Just kidding.  I am confident these fellas will be as good a driver as they are great young men.  But do remember to keep them, and their folks, and all our teens in your prayers always.

We are planning a trip to Six Flags Over Texas early next month.  We’re going to be leaving for Texas Sunday after morning worship.  The Waterview Church has graciously offered to put us up for the evening.  Monday morning we’ll be going to the park.  After spending Monday there, we will return home late that same day.  The cost for the ticket is $30.00.  There will be additional expenses for a couple meals and snacks.  Matt and I are working on meal vouchers for the teens for Six Flags that will be included in the ticket.  We need to know ASAP if you are planning to go so we can give the Waterview folks a heads up on how many to expect.  We will be staying in homes so we need to pair up to make it easier on them.  If you have any questions talk to me or Matt!

We also have been invited to a back to school get together with the teens at Northridge on Friday, August 14th.  We will play volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, and of course, we’ll eat.  It’ll be an excellent time to catch up on what’s been going on with the Northridge kids since camp.  Plan now to be there.

A NATION UNDER GOD

We have heard it over and over, but have we heard it?  “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”  If we have heard it, do we believe it

Historians tend to confirm the assessment of General Douglas MacArthur, “History fails to record a single precedent in which nations subject to moral decay have not passed into political and economic decline.  There has either been a spiritual awakening to overcome the moral lapse, or a progressive deterioration leading to ultimate national disaster.”

Sin is a nation’s shame, and that applies to us.  Pick up today’s paper and read all about it; lying, business dishonesty, pleasure-seeking, murder, rape, fraud, drunkenness, abortion, drug addiction, robbery, lust, selfishness, greed, homosexuality, pornography, gambling, and such like.  These things cannot be ignored.  As Peter Marshall once said, “by our tolerance of some wrongs, we have come close to being intolerant of the right.”  Marshall also declared that we desperately need to be bold enough to confront the face of evil and wrong, “even when it bears our own image.”  It’s a law.  Sow to the wind and reap the whirlwind!

Mark it down.  Our respect , or disrespect, for the laws of God will determine the future of the United States of America.

George Washington, in his Farewell Address spoke rightly when he said, “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable support.  In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness – these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens.  He went on to say, “both reason and experience forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.

I can strengthen this nation, and so can you.  How?  By keeping God’s commandments and doing His will.
