Jesus is Still Coming

As many know, there is a preacher who once again made national headlines by predicting that Jesus Christ was coming back on May 21.  Well, it didn’t happen.  Camping made similar erroneous claims in 1994.  In case you were wondering, this false teacher now is saying October 21 will be the last day when all things are destroyed.  Look for more billboards to come.

The Bible clearly teaches that nobody knows the precise time of Christ’ return.  While on the earth Jesus Christ Himself even told us that even He didn’t know when He was coming back.  Only the Father knows. (cf. Matt. 24:26)  Jesus also said that He is coming like a thief. (Mt. 24:43-44; cf. 1 Thess. 5:2-4; 2 Pt. 3:10)  If someone knew when the thief would come, they would catch him.  This is why we are commanded by Christ to watch and wait expectantly and make ourselves ready for His return at any moment.  He could return in ten minutes, or maybe another 1,000 years.  We don’t know.  No Bible code, or other calculation can determine when He comes back.  No one knows.

Camping is wrong.  But don’t be fooled.  Christ’s return is certain.  Jesus will return one day to judge the world.  (cf. Acts 17:30-31)  So what do we do?

During his 1960 presidential campaign, John F. Kennedy often closed his speeches with the story of Colonel Davenport, the Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives.  On May 19th, 1780 the sky of Hartford darkened ominously, and some of the representatives, glancing out the windows, feared the end was at hand.  Quelling a clamor for immediate adjournment, Davenport rose and said, “The day of Judgement is either approaching or it is not.  If it is not, there is no cause for adjournment.  If it is, I choose to be found doing my duty.  Therefore, I wish that candles be brought.”

When Jesus comes, it will be a sad day for those who are unprepared (2 Thess. 1:7-9). However, His coming will be joyously welcomed by those who are found in Him and faithfully doing His will..  “Faithful until His return” is the mantra for those Christians who are watching and waiting for Him.

Vain attempts to calculate the exact time of Jesus’ return do NOT annul the FACT of His coming.  The important response is to be ready at ANY time!  Are YOU?  “If anyone does not love the Lord, let that person be cursed!  Come, Lord.” (1 Cor. 16:22 NIV)

SYMPATHY

1912          Elva Delores Gill          2011

Hearts were saddened last week at the loss of Central’s oldest member, Elva Gill.  Elva passed away on Tuesday of last week, and funeral services were conducted by Dwyane Dennis and Robert Perry at our building on Friday afternoon.  Elva always had a warm, sometimes mischievous smile for each one of us.  She was our dear friend.  More importantly, she was God’s faithful child.  We will miss Elva for a long time.

BURNT CABIN

Please turn in your Burnt Cabin Camp applications as quickly as possible.  Our camp date is June 12-18.  Also, we need more members to help financially sponsor a child for camp.  Cost is $140.  Please see Robert Prater if you are willing to help.

PRAYER CONCERNS

Carl Wills had heart bypass surgery last Thursday at Integris Baptist Medical Center.  He was moved  to Golden Rule Home on Monday for rehabilitation.

John Johnston had knee replacement surgery at McBride Orthopedic Hospital on Monday.  His surgery went well and he also will be moved for therapy by the later part of the week.

Jo Sneed had a very rare leg bypass surgery at Baptist Medical Center last week that probably saved her from losing her leg.  She is now home, and we are happy that the long ordeal of getting the right diagnosis and proper treatment is finally over.
