AMONG FRIENDS
With Robert Prater

Every December our world pauses and remembers the most significant event in the history of time—God sending His Son to redeem lost humanity.  It is true of course that we know the Bible never tells us to celebrate Christ’s birth on December 25 or any other day.  The fact is no one knows when Jesus was born and we should not bind on others the idea that Christmas is a religious holiday or more sacred than other days in some way. (cf. Rom. 14:5; Gal. 4:10-11)  Now, yes I wish all people celebrated Him every Lord’s Day according to the Biblical pattern in the Lord’s Supper as the early church did. (cf. Acts 2:42; 20:7; 1 Cor. 11:23-26)  Yet I’m glad if only a season, people’s hearts are turned toward Him and we should always make the most of every opportunity to speak for Christ. (cf. Eph. 5:16)

The apostle Paul wrote about the coming of Christ into the world: “But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.” (Galatians 4:4-5 NIV)

The phrase “when the time had finally come”(or, the “fullness of time”) likely refers to the good sense of timing God had in bringing the Christ into the world when He did at a time when the conditions for the spread of Christianity could hardly have been more favorable.  In Greek the world had a universal language through which the gospel message could be spread easily and quickly.  By the time of the birth of Jesus about 4 BC, the Roman Empire was at peace (the Pax Romana), efficiently administered and more prosperous than ever before.

When Immanuel came to Earth the timing and tenor of God’s love for the world was on full display as never before.  That God himself would take on human form and come here to minister, suffer, die and be raised back to life is such good news some can scarcely accept it.  But for those who will accept it, all of life itself suddenly changes.

Years ago, Isaac Watts wrote “Joy to the World”
the well-loved hymn often sung during this busy Christmas season.  Indeed the song expressed our joy at the coming of our Savior: “Joy to the world, the Lord is come!  Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.”(robprater@sbcglobal.net)

RESPONSE FOR PRAYERS

This past Sunday morning our brother Dennis Jones requested prayers.  In his own words, Dennis explained: “I would like to ask the congregation to pray for me and my family for strength to accept what the future holds for me for things done in the past.  Because of a changed life and asking God to forgive me,  I know I have been forgiven, but must deal with the consequences of past actions.  I desire your prayers and forgiveness.”  We so much appreciate the heartfelt humility and courage of Dennis to make such a statement and request.  He truly feels great remorse about his sins and any shame brought upon Christ and the church.  May we as a congregation reach out with loving support and encouragement to both Dennis and Lecia and their families as they go through a very difficult personal time.

I want to thank all of you for your blessing of gifts for my family in our time of need.  We have had it very hard this year with not having a place to live and struggling to find another place to live on short notice due to a man that chose to not use the rent money that we gave him for the right purpose.  God has been helping us find a home in the area in which our children go to school, it is a small two bedroom but we can make it work for our family.  The stress that this mishap has put on our family has been overwhelming.  I just want you all to know that our family Greatly Appreciates your help in providing gifts for the children on Christmas.  You are all incredible people and are blessings in disguise.  Thank you SO MUCH and have a Very Merry Christmas, Tracy, Roger, Hailie & Hunter Grimes

Youth News
Nathan Kelly

The youth have now survived two lock-ins.  It appeared to me that the kids had a little easier time staying up this time than they did last time.  So it can easily be said that the kids had a good time.  I want to say thank you to Bob & Janet Stephens and Steve & Mary Kelly for waking up at 5 in the morning to get breakfast prepared for us.  I also want to give a special thank you to Claire McKnight for volunteering to stay up all night and chaperone with me.

COMING UP:

January 1, after ‘Praise Him 2012’ Area wide church services, area youth will have a fun night of food & games at the Municipal Auditorium gym.

January 8, AWTG @ Seminole. Leave at 4:30
