AMONG FRIENDS
With Robert Prater

Be sure to keep in your prayers our entire group of folks from Central, kids and adults who will be traveling to Rogers, Arkansas on Friday to participate in the Leadership Training for Christ (LTC) convention.  Please give all our kids a great word of encouragement as they continue to grow and develop their abilities in serving the Lord in His kingdom.  We are so grateful and blessed for all those parents, coaches, sponsors and adults who have been diligently preparing and working with them.  We’re proud of all of you!

Please also be keeping in mind our upcoming Friends & Family Day on Sunday, April 22.  We will also once again enjoy a terrific catered meal from Chicago Street Deli to be served in the Municipal building immediately following the morning service.  Now this year’s speaker will be Mike Schroeder who is the pulpit minister for the Blue Starr Church of Christ in Claremore, Oklahoma.  Mike brings a wonderful passion for Christ and valuable real life experiences to address our theme of “Getting Another Chance.”  He’ll be speaking in the combined teen and adult Bible classes on “Picking up the Pieces” (A Broken Down World), in the AM worship hour on “Healing for our Broken Hearts” and concluding with the PM service on “Claiming our Future, Changing our Destiny.”

What a relief that we worship the God of second chances!  If there’s one truth that’s indisputable about human beings, it’s that we have an infinite capacity to mess up.  But even more infinite than our ability to sin is God’s desire to forgive us.  So whether it’s marriage, a job, a relationship, your finances, or whatever, God hasn’t given up on us.  He wants to forgive, make right, and guide us into the purpose He has for our life.

Finally, this coming Sunday we usually have a host of visitors for Easter Sunday.  Let’s do our part and invite others to join us.  Although we don’t make a special day of worship on this annual event, we do engage in a meaningful remembrance of the Lord’s death, burial and resurrection.  And it’s still interesting to find folks who are amazed to find that we do this memorial every Lord’s Day.  Now that might be a way to begin a conversation about why we don’t make a special day on just one Sunday.  We know instead how the resurrection of Christ was always emphasized on the Lord’s Day and in the weekly observance of the Lord’s Supper on every first day of the week. (cf. Acts 2:42; 20:7; 1 Cor. 11:23-24; 16:1-2)

Now make no mistake about it; the truth that Jesus came out of the grave means everything to us as Christians. (cf. Rom. 1:4; 1 Cor. 15:14-17; 1 Peter 3:21-22)  The resurrection of Jesus Christ certainly gives meaning to the Lord’s Supper we  observe each first day of the week. (cf. Rom. 4:25; 8:34)  Indeed this exciting fact gives meaning to every aspect of our worship.  Let’s study the resurrection as it will certainly strengthen our faith and its truth will enhance our worship.  See on the Lord’s Day, the day of resurrection!

LIVING BY SON-LIGHT

Some of our days seem very dark.  Sickness, the death of a loved one, the loss of a job or another struggle overshadows life.  In our despair, it can be difficult to sense God’s presence.  If God were here, we reason, surely he’d be shining his light on our dark circumstances.

When life is bright and joyous, it’s easy to sense God; the sun becomes a natural metaphor for God’s Son, Jesus, the Light of the world.  But even on cloudy days, the sun still shines, its presence not bound by our limited vision.  And in the darkest night, the sun remains; the warmth it gave before dusk lingers, enough to preserve us into the dawning of a new day.  Sometimes we even catch its reflection in the moon.

“Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning” (Psalm 30:5b, NRSV).  Trust in God; even in life’s dark times, the Son still shines!
