Bulletin for Sunday 01/13/2013
With Robert Prater
This past Sunday evening over 600 members from the Shawnee area churches of Christ enjoyed a wonderful time of worship and fellowship at the Shawnee Expo Center for Praise Him 2013! This has become such a grand occasion for us to really enjoying awesome singing and to catch up with our brethren from around the area. Jake Lynn, a high school senior and member at Westside congregation in Norman, led our singing in a very enthusiastic way and the sound was simply heavenly. People just come out to this service ready to step it up a notch in their volume and energy. Kent Allen brought a very timely and powerful lesson on the importance of parents and the family. The fellowship afterward was sweet and warm. I understand the area youth had a great time at Star Skate! Too many congregations it seems isolate themselves from other area brethren. Sunday night increased our sense of brotherhood! It also let us see and know (and the Shawnee area) that the Lord’s church is alive and well in this community.
A recent Gallup Poll revealed that only ten percent of America church members are active in any personal ministry and that 50 percent have no interest in serving in such a capacity. Churches that are growing have succeeded in turning an audience into an army, and spectators into participants. One person has posed the following questions below to help us examine the strength and vitality of our faith:
1. Have you talked directly to any person in the past year about becoming a Christian?
2. If your spouse and children were to speak frankly, would it be revealed that your commitment to Christ has shown through to them?
3. If nobody told you, how long would it take to discover that the Sunday night and Wednesday evening services had been discontinued? (Which they have not been--rp!)
4. Does the newspaper, television, the movie theater, the ball game, or the weekend safari prevent you from regular meditation on the Scriptures?
5. If Jesus were to visibly appear next Sunday at worship to receive your contribution, would you give it without shame?
The only kind of faith the Lord will accept is a working faith that is motivated by love. (Gal. 5:6) If your faith is dead and no longer active and obedient, you can resurrect it with the Lord’s help so you can experience the resurrection to eternal life.
Saving faith is not just professing to believe in Jesus and warming a pew. It is having the kind of faith that makes an obvious difference in our lives. It turns us into participants in the Lord’s work rather than spectators; soldiers in the army rather than just members of the audience. Which kind do you have?

A NEW YEAR POEM
Another fresh new year is here…
Another year to live!
To banish worry, doubt, and fear,
To love and laugh and give!
This bright new year is given me
To live each day with zest…
To daily grow and try to be
My highest and my best!
I have the opportunity
Once more to right some wrongs,
To pray for peace, to plant a tree,
And sing more joyful songs!
- William Arthur Ward
Skating after Praise Him went well. There were a few bumps and bruises but nothing too bad. No broken bones, which is better than last time. I wanted to let everyone know that on February 3 is the Area-Wide in Norman. This also means that we are invited to attend the OU women’s basketball game. I’ve already bought 12 tickets for the game so start thinking about whether or not you want to attend. LTC chorus will practice Sunday afternoon from 3 ‘til 4:30 p.m.
Upcoming Youth Events:
