Bulletin for Sunday 02/17/2013
With Robert Prater
Are you living your Christianity each day of the week, the same as you practice Sunday? A few years ago I was visiting with a manager of a restaurant and he was commenting on things he had seen over the years from regular customers whom he knew to be Christians. He told me about a customer who weekly came to his restaurant after attending Sunday morning church. On her last visit, a mistake was made on her order. The manager realized that his people were at fault and tried to make things right with the customer. Nothing would placate her. She angrily stormed away. Having watched this display of inappropriateness, the manager called as she left, speaking only one sentence, “Your Christianity is sure doing you a lot of good!” I imagine it would be difficult to ever get the manager to visit our worship services.
Unfortunately, most people judge the church by its members. That makes me wonder how much good my Christianity is doing. What portrait of Christianity do I paint in the work place, in places that I do business? In places where I go for recreation? Am I spreading the fragrance of Christ everywhere I go or does my brand of Christianity turn people off? Yes, it’s important that we live what we practice.
The late gospel preacher G. C. Brewer once commented on where he attended services, “I would not have anyone teach a class who doesn’t attend all the services of the church. What is a teacher to teach? If he or she is not going to teach respect for, and fidelity to the Lord’s blood-brought institution, why should he or she teach anything? If a teacher is not going to teach students to become Christians and to live faithfully in their lives why should he or she teach? Don’t teach if you’re not going to live it!”
“Teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.” (Titus 2:12) Let’s be very careful to always set the right example with our families, fellow Christians, and especially those in the world that we are trying to influence. People we are around need to see us living what we practice!
Sermons for Sunday
AM “Here I am” (Genesis 22:1-14)
PM A Funeral for Abraham
There isn’t a word that a preacher can say,
No matter how lovely or true.
Nor is there a prayer that his lips can pray
That can preach such a sermon as you.
You vowed to serve Christ and men know that you did.
They’re watching the things you do;
There isn’t one action of yours that is hid,
Men are watching and studying you.
You say you’re no preacher? Yes, but you preach
A wonderful sermon each day;
The acts of your life are the things that you teach,
It isn’t only the things that you say.
So, Christians, remember you bear his name;
Your lives are for others to view;
You are living examples, men praise you or blame
And measure all Christians by you.

Over the weekend Kylee and I got to see just how artistic and creative the youth can be. Making valentines was a real success. I have to thank my wife for organizing it for me. Where I saw chaos, she saw order. It wouldn’t have been nearly as good nor as fun if it wasn’t for her. Now back to LTC practice.
