“NOT RICH TOWARD GOD”

“Not rich toward God.”  These are the words Jesus used to conclude one of His well-known parables.  But what was Jesus talking about when he made that statement?

I’m sure you remember the story, Jesus told of a man whose crops were so abundant that he didn’t have a place to store all the surplus.  This was a problem (but a good one for a farmer to have).  Many of us would love to face the concern of having to deal with excess wealth.  But back to the story.  After some consideration, the farmer decides that the best thing to do is to tear down his barns and build larger ones.  After that his future will be assured.  He can retire without any money worries.

Jesus permits us to listen in as this rich man talks to himself.  “And I will say to my soul, ‘Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.’” (Luke 12:19)

There is no indication that this man was especially wicked.  He had worked hard and his efforts had paid off.  He was now prepared for the future – he thought.

“But God said to him, ‘Fool!  This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?” (Luke 12:20)

What is the point of the parable?  Jesus expressed it in these words:  “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” (Luke 12:21)

Earthly riches, the object of so much concern and effort, can become utterly meaningless in an instant of time.  How much more important it is to be “rich toward God.”  JOHN GIPSON - WINDSONG CHURCH OF CHRIST

BULLETIN CHANGING

Beginning in May, we will be making changes in the way The Gospel Guide is sent.  You will be able to receive this by going on-line at tenthandbell.org or you can pick up a copy at church services.  If you wish to be included in weekly email notice that the bulletin has been posted online, send an email to webdude@shawneecentralcofc.org.  For out of town recipients who wish to continue to receive our bulletin, if you are unable to receive it via internet, you may request a hard copy to be mailed to you.  We feel that the savings in doing it this way will enable us to use the Lord’s money more efficiently.

Youth News
Nathan Kelly

Well, May will soon be upon us. We have an Area Wide on Sunday, May 5. It will be at Wilshire in Oklahoma City. May 11 is the Men’s Retreat.  Even though I know they’re not men, the guys in the youth group are allowed to join.  It’ll be fun.    I don’t have the summer planned just yet but I have some ideas.  I know I’ve been promising this for a couple of months now, but if it works for everyone, May 19 we will finally go play lazer tag in Ada.  We will discuss all this and more in the near future, but that’s a tentative schedule for the month of May.

May 5, AWTG @ Wilshire in OKC

May 10 & 11, Central Men’s Retreat

ACHIEVING SUCCESS

When Ralph Waldo Emerson reflected on true success, he didn’t mention fame, fortune or social status.  Ponder his thoughts – and your own definition of success:

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a redeemed social condition or a job well done; to know even one other life has breathed because you lived – this is to have succeeded.”
